SO WHY COORDINATE, ANYWAY?
However, the Coordinator system is not, and probably will never be, as fleshed out as the Gym Leader route. So why coordinate, anyway? Or, if you like ribbons that much, why not breed and be able to take the best of both worlds?
One word for you, baby - fame.
Coordinators are, in a word, icons. Yes, you hear of incredibly skilled trainers every once and a while, but who are they? They're the top five people and Gym Leaders. The everyday trainer doesn't really have a chance of ever making it so huge. Coordinators, on the other hand? Watched for fashion - they're the real celebrities of the pokemon world. Sure, you'll hear of the others every so often - but these are the People Magazine style celebs - the people that every other person is talking about. Paparazzi exist to stalk them.
How will we express this fame? Take a look a Like, Totally! - a magazine describing what's hot and what's not. Who decides this? Top coordinators.
Coordinator shows will be a big part of this magazine - complete with listing of all the big names. Sure, at the bottom there'll be an anecdote about the most accomplished trainer or something, but compared to the articles about which coord is dating who, their favorite fashion places, their roles in whatever, etc - they'll be only there for the sake of 'oh, and here's the most accomplished trainer. yeah.'
Fame ensures that people know who that character is, and also influences 'trends' in coordinating shows (like, say that the most popular person uses pink ribbons - so pink ribbons are sure to help you win shows - but they're also super expensive in shops).

RIGHT, SO, HOW DOES IT WORK?
Coordinating works as a competition between players. There is a post that states that there will be a contest (once every two weeks), coordinators enter, and they compete against each other in two rounds (show and display). Show is just how well you dress up a pokemon to fit a theme (with items from the Coordinator shops), while display is showing off how creative you are with your moveset.
This is different than the shows that breeders can compete in, but I'll touch on that later.
Display is a completely creativity based deal. We want to see how wacky and cool you can get with the moveset that you assign your pokemon. How awesome your technique ends up being, however, is left strictly up to the judges (who are mods, if you must know).
Furthermore, there is a minimum of two coordinators per contest. Any less and a mod-controlled NPC will compete (to help progression).
UNLIKE THE ANIME there will be NO BATTLING.
They're not trainers, darn it.
To earn ribbons, a coordinator MUST
EDIT, 11/10/10 -- Edited the contest system. To earn ribbons, one merely needs to place in the first hall, you need second or first for the second, and third for the final two. Hopefully this helps out everyone!
Remember, the more fame a Coordinator collects, the better they do in the 'show' portion of the contest (seeing as their items will get higher on the trend list).
There can also be optional added goodies for winning contests (cute accessories that can only be won there, a rare pokemon egg, money, etc).
For every win, a Coordinator wins 10 EVO; every loss, they win 5.
This is the standard until the FINAL HALL, which is only open to people who have won three ribbons. Once that's set, Coordinators can compete until they're famous enough to attract the attention of the Hall Champion. Upon beating the Hall Champion, that player earns their fourth ribbon. To become Hall Champion, a challenger must win against the current one twice.
This is mainly so we don't go through HCs so quickly, so we don't stall progression, and so people can actually win and the HC doesn't have to go full force on everyone.
COORDINATORS MAY USE ONE POKEMON PER CONTEST.

BUT WHAT ABOUT BREEDERS?
Show winning pokemon are awarded trophies (for themselves, not their breeders) and increase the chance for their children to be shiny by one per trophy. Max of four trophies.
Futhermore, the more trophies a Breeder accumulates, the more benefits they can have - though what those could be will not be revealed until later~[/ul]
ALL THIS SAID, GUYS, HAPPY SHOWING~
